Aging: Gently Exfoliate and Increase Cell Turnover
How to Treat
With sun exposure and natural chronological (intrinsic) aging, the stratum corneum becomes impacted. Superficial exfoliating treatments will gently remove surface buildup, leading to a smoother appearance. The PCA SKIN® professional treatments recommended for age control include bioavailable alpha and beta hydroxy acids, retinoids, skin-firming polysaccharides, and hydrating and plumping phytohormones.
The cellular turnover cycle slows considerably with age. Daily use of topical products designed to increase cell turnover is imperative for patients concerned with visible aging. Professional treatment options may also be used to increase visible exfoliation and cellular turnover. Vitamin A derivatives (retinoids) help increase cellular proliferation and turnover, bringing healthy cells to the surface more quickly. The agent used must be chosen carefully, as some of the more popular retinoids (Retin-A®) can be irritating. Retinol is a more gentle vitamin A derivative that is highly effective, yet non-irritating. Certain botanicals, such as vigna aconitifolia seed extract, increase cell turnover without irritation. The use of superficial chemical peels will also help increase cell turnover, revealing a more youthful appearance.
